Agent pricing psychology: why $4.99/run outsells $199 flat

The 3 pricing archetypes that convert on outcome marketplaces, backed by observed AgentForge data.

Agent pricing psychology: why $4.99/run outsells $199 flat

Three archetypes, one heuristic

After a few dozen agent launches on AgentForge, three pricing patterns keep winning:

  1. Rent-per-run ($1–$50). Highest volume. Wins for repetitive, well-scoped tasks like triage, classification, or single-page analysis.
  2. Rent-per-job ($50–$500). Wins for outcome-shaped work with a clear deliverable — SEO articles, contract reviews, real-estate memos.
  3. Buy-out ($200–$3,000). One-time. Fits agencies who want to embed a proven workflow forever.

The heuristic: price at 10–20% of the cost the buyer avoids by not doing the task themselves.

Why $4.99 outsells $199

Because agents on a marketplace compete on a "should I even try this" decision. At $4.99 the answer is always yes. At $199 the answer requires a meeting. Volume wins compounding data, compounding data wins the leaderboard, and the leaderboard is what drives the next 100 buyers.

The 30% platform-fee mistake

Fees above ~15% push power creators to build direct-to-customer alternatives. AgentForge caps fees at 20% for Free tier and drops to 8% at Premium — this keeps the top of the pyramid loyal while free-tier fees pay for growth experiments.

Bundling: the sneaky lever

Sell the workflow file + 10 pre-paid runs at a 30% discount. Convert per-run buyers into perceived-owners. Their retention is 3× higher in our data.

Free tier: pain, then trust

The right free tier lets the buyer experience the full loop — evidence chain, hash, receipt — but with strict volume caps. When they hit the cap, they've already seen the magic. Conversion at that moment is 40–60% based on our conversion funnels.

Anti-patterns

  • Trial that hides the loop. If the buyer can't see the audit chain during the trial, they never learn why they should pay.
  • Bundling model choice into pricing. Don't ask a first-time buyer to pick GPT-4o vs Claude Sonnet. Ship a sensible default with the vk_ scope.
  • Percentage discounts for annual. Show absolute savings ("save $58") — always outperforms "save 17%."
